Corporate and Group Opportunities

Food & Friends is the ideal location for your next corporate or group volunteer activity.  As an organization that prepares an delivers more than one million meals a year, the time and talents of many volunteers are needed to ensure that more than 2,800 of our neighbors throughout the Washington region living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-challneging  illnesses receive nutritious meals at their door.

If you are interested in organizing a team of volunteers from your corporation, school, service group, social club or faith-based organization, please contact Carrie Stoltzfus at or at (202) 269-6848. An orientation will be held the same day prior to beginning the service project.  Once you have been scheduled for a volunteer date, you will be sent a confirmation email with additional information, directions and a waiver. Each group member will need to complete this waiver prior to volunteering with Food & Friends. Waivers should be given to the volunteer coordinator assigned to your group when you arrive; they do not need to be mailed or faxed ahead of time.

Below are opportunities and popular activities among corporate volunteer groups.

Adopt A Delivery Route
Whether it is a weekly or monthly commitment, this activity has an immediate impact on both the delivery volunteer and the client who receives the meals.  Delivery volunteers put the "friend" in Food & Friends.  In addition to providing nourishment, a smile and a warm greeting goes a long way for our clients, many of whom are homebound and therefore do not interact with many people.

Duties include:
--  picking up meals at Food & Friends or one of our 14 neighborhood distribution centers;
--  delivering meals to clients in DC, VA or MD.  Delivery routes typically have 6-10 stops and take 1.5 - 2 hours to deliver; and
--  reporting when clients are not home to receive their delivery.

Resources needed:
--  2 people per delivery route, a week or month
--  1.5 - 2 hours to deliver

For all companies that express an interest in commiting to adopt a delivery route, Food & Friends will be happy to conduct a private orientation for delivery drivers at the company's office or preferred location.

Meal Prep and Grocery Packing
Groups to help with meal preparation and grocery packing are in constant demand at Food & Friends' facility in Northeast Washington, DC.  A terrific team-building activity, colleagues work together to help get the day's worth of meals -- an average of 3,200 daily -- out the doors.  Volunteer shifts are generally 9:00 am to 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Duties include:
--  slicing/dicing/chopping fruits and vegetables;
--  portioning food into containers;
--  packing client meals;
--  washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen;
--  packing bags with non-perishable items;
--  packing and labeling prepared frozen meals; and
--  stocking grocery shelves.

Resources needed:
--  a group anywhere from 5 to 40 people (coordination of large groups must be done in advance)
-- 2 to 3 hours

Groups are also welcome to use our classroom space to serve breakfast or lunch to their employees.
