Food & Friends delivers meals and groceries to clients living throughout DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Our delivery radius covers more than 5,300 square miles, so volunteers play a critical role in accomplishing this daily endeavor. Deliveries are made between 10:00am-3:00pm, so volunteers are asked to begin their route between 9:30 a.m.- Noon. A typical route has between 6-10 stops and can take anywhere from 1-3 hours to complete. Maps and written driving directions are provided for each route.
This is a great way to connect with our clients. It is also a great activity to do with your friends, family, or co-workers duringn your lunch hour. Volunteers must use their own vehicle, be at least 18 years old (or accompanied by someone 18 years or older), and have a valid driver's license to participate. If you are interested in becoming a delivery volunteer, please contact Don Pitz at 202.269.6835.
You can choose to pick up the meals at Food & Friends or at any of our convenient Distribution Partners.
Where do we need the help?
We prefer matching up volunteers with the neighborhood they know the best. If it is most convenient for you to deliver in Woodbridge, VA, then we will set you up with the Woodbridge route. Volunteers “adopt a route." If you sign up to deliver in Woodbridge, you will always be delivering to the same area. That way, you will typically see the same clients. That means a lot to our clients, as they get used to seeing you, and lasting bonds and friendships can develop.
Our area of greatest need is the neighborhoods outside the Capitol Beltway. We deliver to these areas on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. If you live or work outside the Capitol Beltway, we may be able to drop off your deliveries at your home or office. We do this for a number of volunteers. It works great for us, and this is the most convenient way for our volunteers to fit their deliveries inside a lunch break.
We also have a need for delivery volunteers to serve neighborhoods in the Eastern quadrants of DC, as well as our clients in Maryland who live inside the Capitol Beltway in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. We have a special need for volunteers in these areas on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
